Arne Grashoff delves into the forms of identity, gender, and corporeality, examining their social constructions and the interconnected aspects of belonging, (co-) dependency, and resistance. His photographic sculptures and installations question social and emotional interactions, physical experiences, the shaping of our bodily and gender consciousness by social norms and cultural contexts, as well as the cosmos of existential needs, vulnerability, and transience in a post-digital world permeated by political and economic power structures. In Grashoff’s practice, the boundaries of photography expand into three-dimensionality, as he reimagines it as a sculptural and spatial medium. He investigates the potential of photographic sculptures and installations where the image is not only a representation but is perceived as a physical object imbued with materiality, volume, and depth. The materiality and resonance of these objects are at the heart of his work, transforming them into material — and even social — agents. His creations emerge from the form and materiality of the objects themselves, the use of everyday items with their embedded layers of meaning, and their placement within space and time. Through this approach, the objects become vessels of meaning, inviting viewers into imaginative interpretation as medium and motif intertwine in associative harmony. His creative process is highly procedural, encompassing both a hands-on engagement with the camera and immersive, solitary work in the darkroom. Analog and digital photographs are merged with materiality through varied printing and analog exposure techniques; sculptural photographic forms materialize in textile and PVC assemblages, as well as spatial video installations that incorporate wax, silicone, and epoxy resin sculptures. By staging photographic objects within space, Grashoff creates immersive situations that invite interaction and inspire the viewer’s imagination. His work merges photographic imagery with sculptural form, engaging the surrounding space and the passage of time as integral to the work’s meaning. Through this approach, Grashoff seeks to redefine photography as an art form, situating it within an expanded socio-cultural and aesthetic framework.

Arne Grashoff lives and works in Berlin, where he is active as an artist, communication designer and art handler.
